It was a big night for Docklands light-middleweight Sam Webb, as he scored a British title triumph over flashy favourite Anthony Small.

Ricky Hatton's promotional team staged their first London show at Dagenham's Goresbrook Centre on Friday.

Webb's supporters went home happy after the 28-year-old took a majority decision on the judges' scorecards, getting the verdict, 117-113 and 117-112 from two of them with the third scoring it even, 115-115.

After a slow start from both fighters, the challenger's courage was certainly put to the test when had suffered a gash above his right eye after a clash of heads in the fifth round.

The injury survived an inspection from the doctor in the sixth after showboat Small, who entered the ring in an all-white suit and trilby hat, piled on the pressure looking to finish the bout with a stoppage.

Webb, fearing the injury may lead to the bout being halted, then took control despite having to deal with blood flowing around his eye, as the champion fought mainly in spurts and lost his early lead

The challenger pressed forward impressively in the latter rounds slamming home the two-fisted attacks that swayed the verdict his way.

"I managed to dig deep and pull it out - I'm over the moon," said Webb.

The loser is keen for a return clash- but the new champ may take a voluntary defence first.

The show proved a bright night for the Hatton clan with a European title triumph for younger brother Matthew Hatton who won European title glory with a points victory over Italian Gianluca Branco.

l Pat McAleese unbeaten TKO gym light middleweight looked unlucky to be given just a draw against Barnsley rival Lee Noble at the end of their hard-fought six rounder on the undercard.

McLeese who had won his previous ten contests, poured on the punches against a taller rival who replied mainly in short bursts.

The referee scored it 58-58 but the east London gym fighter said: "I thought I had won the fight - but a draw is not the end of the world and I will be back training hard in the gym next week."

Joey Catchpole, light-welterweight made it a winning debut on the Hatton show, outpointing fight-anywhere journeyman Johnny Greaves with the referee scoring all four rounds in his favour.

Southpaw Catchpole made the most of his height and reach advantage, firing out accurate jabs to keep the experienced Greaves at bay and pleased his enthusiastic supporters with a promising points success.
