It proved to be a family affair for the Veras’ as they came back with medals from the Kaiten International Open Karate Championships last weekend in Holland.

Father and Sensei Raphael Veras, who runs the Veras Academy Karate Club in Poplar, competed in the under-67kg Elite Kumite category and he fought valiantly through three tough rounds to come away with a bronze medal.

Nine-year-old Luan Veras also returned with a bronze medal for his efforts in the under-10 years and over-33kg Kumite category.

He managed to defeat competitors from the host country and Belgium to pick up the medal.

Fellow brothers Liam and Luca were also in action, alongside team-mate Emre Omer, aged eight.

They competed in the under-10 years under-33kg Kumite event with Liam and Omer coming up against eachother in the repechage pool.

Liam came out on top and progressed to finish fifth overall with brother Luca, while Omer took seventh.

They had gone into the meeting well prepared having competed in the recent British and Luxemburg internationals, as well as the WKF Shotokan World Level Championships in Istanbul.
