Women enjoy good wins

East London’s women produced a superb display to claim a 4-0 win over their Thurrock rivals.

The home side spent more time in their opponent’s D than usual at the Lee Valley Hockey & Tennis Centre, with Grace Lant and Christina Malcolm netting from short corners in the first half.

Susanne Lindner, Caroline Dover, Rachel James and Karen Allan combined well in defence after the restart to deny the visitors a reply.

And that allowed Amy Rogers and captain Stacey Nicholl to push further forward, leading to a third goal from Nicholl.

Lucy Canham completed the tally after a flowing move, as Laura Wilkins preserved her clear sheet.

Eilis Quinlan shared the player of the match award with Nicholl ahead of their trip to Burnt Ash this weekend, but East London’s men returned empty-handed from their trip to Witham after a 2-1 defeat.

Defences held firm during a scoreless first half played in heavy snow, but East London saw Arnold Jullen sent off for a stick tackle 10 minutes after the restart.

The hosts broke the deadlock from the resultant short corner and added a second while still enjoying a man advantage when a cross from the right was turned in at the far post.

East London replied once back to full strength as Joe Green deflected home a short corner, but despite Witham picking up a yellow card in the closing stages, the visitors could not capitalise.

They play host to Letchworth seconds this weekend.

The women’s fifth team put Witham thirds to the sword in their meeting, hitting 16 goals without reply.

Julia Birchall, Lauren Costello and Tania Douglas all claimed hat-tricks, with Vikkie Judd and Morag Campbell adding braces.

Christina Hegarty, Emma Hanafin and Fiona Isaacson completed the rout.

The mixed team also hit double figures against Redbridge, with Ben Howson and Sam Boddington claiming trebles in a 12-1 triumph.

Green, Ceylan Gomez and Steve Canwell all struck twice each to make it a round dozen.

David Siddall’s strike earned the men’s thirds a 1-1 draw with Witham seconds, while Guy Paul and Patrick Kenyon netted as the fourths drew 2-2 with Havering seconds.

James Eaton, Marc Bull and Marco Geraldes led the fifths to a 3-1 win over Clacton seconds.
