Repton Boxing Club set another record with a massive 18 winners at the North East London Division Schools’ Championships at Chingford on Saturday – the first step along the national title trail.

The Bethnal Green squad, always strong at schoolboy level, will be looking to continue their success as the championships continue when the London semi-finals are held at Feltham this weekend, followed by the London finals a week later.

Impressing on Saturday, in a six-hour tournament of more than 30 bouts, were Repton’s past winners and some bright new boys looking for 2013 honours.

Levi Lee and Levi Coates, both national champions in 2011, came through their opening tests in style – with Lee winning an all-action contest against Dagenham’s much-improved Kerim Agius.

Agius, halted by Lee a year ago, battled non stop in a game effort to reverse that loss, but Lee came through a winner in a very close finish in the Class Three 38kg clash.

Coates came through his Class Two 40kg division as the champion when he outworked West Ham rival Luca Reid in the title decider.

Also launching his title challenge in style, 2012 national winner Michael Oates took the Class Two under 34kg title, outpointing West Ham’s Keiran Desmond in an entertaining final.

Another quality clash saw 2012 national runner-up John Doran win his Class Two 36kg meeting with Hammers’ Paul Ellis, on a day when there were some eye-catching performances from Repton’s Class One new boys.

Jermal Khan showed his natural ability, dictating the exchanges against Dagenham’s Jimmy Croxson to win the Class One 40kg award. Another bright prospect, Jesse Beck also sparkled in his under-38kg title success over Bobby Gurr (Hornchurch), landing well-placed shots to make sure of the verdict.

There could be another title for Repton, with Rakim Tatou boxing his delayed Class One 34kg bout tonight (Wednesday).

Repton’s title parade: Class One – John Lee 30kg, Adaan Hussain 32kg, Jesse Beck 38kg, Jamal Khan 40kg, Henry Turner 42kg and Ben Gentle 57kg.
