Thousands of spectators cheered the latest round in the Halfords tour series staged at Canary Wharf last night as the Endura cycle team led by Australian Zak Dempster sprinted to victory to take both individual and team honours.
The Round 7 win extends their lead at the top of the series to 11 points, the team’s fifth victory of the 2012 season.
Dempster himself outsprinted World Track champion Andy Tennant at the end of the gruelling hour-long race in the 50-strong field battling it out on the one-kilometre circuit between Canada Square and Cabot Square.
But the evening began with the Corporate Grand Prix relay, with some of Canary Wharf’s big names competing such as Thomson Reuters global news service, Clifford Chance international law firm and Reebok sports club. Russell Downing led his Clifford Chance team to victory.
Jason White who led Thomson Reuters to victory in last year’s Corporate Grand Prix, said: “The atmosphere at Canary Wharf is unreal—it seems everyone becomes a cycling fan for the day.”
The area was close to traffic before the Corporate race got under way, with the Halfords Series starting an hour later. Highlights are being shown on ITV4 at 8pm tonight (June 1).
