Tower Hamlets Women have climbed out of the London and South East Division One drop zone following a 2-1 win over Kent Magpies

Tower Hamlets Women have climbed out of the London and South East Division One drop zone following a 2-1 win over Kent Magpies at Meath Gardens on Sunday.

The Cows had failed to register a league win in seven matches ahead of the clash and entered the match desperate to avenge last month's narrow defeat against the same opponents.

And despite hitting the woodwork and seeing another effort cleared off the line, goals from Lucy Mills and Susie Hill secured a vital victory that lifts the Cows out of the relegation zone with two matches of the season remaining.

Cows manager Desmond Moreira said: "The score ended 2-1 but it was a one-sided affair and all three points were very much deserved.

"Current results have been going against us so at 1-1 for the last 20 minutes I was wondering if I would have any fingers left, let alone finger nails.

"But we steadied ourselves and went at them again, and struck the winner with a fine solo effort."

With defender Katy Arnold back in the side following a season-long absence with a knee injury, Tower Hamlets started brightly and should have taken the lead only to see a header come back off the crossbar before Kent cleared a second chance off the line.

But striker Mills (pictured) finally made the breakthrough after half-time as she chased down a hopeful punt forward to slot past the stranded Kent goalkeeper.

Tower Hamlets were in danger of letting the match slip from their grasp when the Magpies levelled against the run of play with 20 minutes remaining, but a fine individual effort from Hill, who had tormented the Kent full-back throughout the encounter, secured a deserved win and lifted the club up the table.
