Peter Taylor marked his first game at Victoria Road as Dagenham & Redbridge boss with a 2-1 friendly win over a West Ham United XI.

In a lively first half, Daggers looked the better side with new signing Ollie Harfield delivering some dangerous set-pieces.

The Victoria Road outfit made their dominance tell in the second half, with Lamar Reynolds and Harfield both on target.

Less than five minutes were on the clock when Daggers keeper Elliot Justham was called into action for the first time.

A loose pass by the home defence gifted possession to Kristijan Belic, who played in Dapo Afolayan.

However, Justham was out quick to close down Afolayan and blocked the shot from the former Solihull Moors attacker.

Nine minutes later, the Essex club nearly forged an opening themselves when the ball somehow found its way to Chike Kandi in the area.

The striker, though, just could not get the ball out from under his feet in time to fashion an effort, before Hammers stopper Paul Woolston cleared.

In the 28th minute, West Ham defender Ajibola Alese sliced a Gavin Hoyte cross from the right into the path of Elliott Romain, who volleyed over the bar from 12 yards.

Taylor’s men continued to probe and four minutes later, a Harfield corner from the right found Luke Pennell, whose powerful header from six yards forced a good save from Woolston.

Harfield looked keen to show he was a dead-ball specialist, with a vicious free-kick from 20 yards with 10 minutes left in the half drawing a solid stop from Woolston.

Another Harfield delivery caused problems in the Hammers defence in the 44th minute, with a free-kick picking out Pennell who nodded over from 10 yards.

That proved to be the final goalmouth action of the half as the sides went into the break level.

It took Daggers just five minutes of the second half to break the deadlock, though, with substitute Lamar Reynolds on target.

The winger, a summer signing from Newport County, showed good pace to burst past Hammers right back Ben Johnson.

Reynolds then made his way into the box, before firing high into the net to open the scoring.

The former Barking forward could have had a second two minutes later, forcing replacement West Ham custodian Joseph Anang into action after showing quick feet to create an opening.

In the 65th minute, Romain also had a chance to double the lead for the hosts, but was denied by Anang after breaking clear of the defence.

Daggers did have their second, though, five minutes later when Harfield lashed home from the edge of the area.

With 15 minutes remaining, the young Hammers pulled one back when substitute Harrison Ashby cannoned a shot in off the upright.

No further goals were forthcoming as Daggers earned their first win of pre-season, and will look for a second when they host Colchester United on Tuesday night.
