Barkingside began their Essex Senior League campaign with a 2-1 win at Great Wakering Rovers.

Managed by Michael Walther, Side were without a fixture on the opening day of the season on Saturday, so had to wait until Tuesday to get underway.

The Cricklefield Stadium club took the lead in the eighth minute at Great Wakering through Jerome Martelli, though the visitors were pegged back by Charlie Kirby four minutes later.

However, in the 72nd minute, substitute Tony Cookey scored what proved to be the winner to hand Barkingside all three points at Burroughs Park.

Hackney Wick and Tower Hamlets had to settle for a share of the spoils after a 1-1 draw at the Old Spotted Dog.

Curtis Pond struck an equaliser in the 71st minute for Hamlets after Wick had taken the lead in the first half.

Oscar Mendes and Ashaan Siddik were on target for Sporting Bengal United as they drew 2-2 at West Essex.

Calvin Poku made it two goals in two league games this season for Redbridge, netting a 51st minute equaliser as the Motormen drew 1-1 at home to Sawbridgeworth Town.
