Andy Edwards promoted from Academy Director to assistant manager at Leyton Orient

Andy Hessenthaler has made the O’s Academy Director his number two which should please most Brisbane Road supporters

Leyton Orient have confirmed Andy Edwards has been promoted to the role of assistant manager at the League Two club.

The 44-year-old was previously Academy Director at Brisbane Road, but will now be Andy Hessenthaler’s number two for the 2016/17 campaign.

It is likely to be received positively by most O’s supporters with the majority lauding his work with the academy.

Edwards joined Orient in 2009 as youth team manager, but after just two years became Academy Director for the east Londoners.

Since then he has played a huge part in numerous youngsters progressing through to the first team at Brisbane Road.

While not all of them have made the cut in E10, a lot have gone on to play for other Football League clubs and enjoyed success.

Following the appointment of Kevin Nolan as player-manager in January, Edwards was given a more hands on role with the first team.

He was essentially another coach alongside Nolan on a match day, although he still remained as Academy Director at the club.

When the former West Ham United captain lost his managerial roles, Edwards assisted Hessenthaler in taking charge of the team for the final five League Two games of the 2015/16 campaign.

During the final two matches of the season, 18-year-old’s Aron Pollock and Sam Sargeant were given opportunities and impressed.

Edwards will hope to bring success to Brisbane Road next year and this promotion is likely to mean more youngsters at O’s will get chances in the first team.
