McAnuff will offer a huge amount on the pitch, but his presence off it could be just as important to the club
Steve Davis has insisted former Reading captain Jobi McAnuff has nothing to prove at Leyton Orient.
The experienced winger re-signed for the O’s last week, agreeing a one-year deal with the E10 club.
McAnuff spent two seasons with Orient before, but endured a tough time at Brisbane Road under Francesco Becchetti’s tenure.
When reflecting on the decision to bring the Jamaican international back, Davis said the 35-year-old just needs to play well.
He said: “I am delighted to have Jobi here with the experience he has got and the know-how of the club he has from before, so that’s very helpful.
“I don’t think he has a point to prove. I know some people have said that, but I am sure he doesn’t.
“He just needs to play well and work very hard for this football club and if he gives us that then we will all be happy.
“I am sure he will do that and he has come here to help the club and team get back into the Football League.”
The overwhelming reaction to McAnuff’s signing was positive and the winger did show glimpses of his class at Greenwich Borough on Saturday.
You could also hear the former Wimbledon youngster offering advice to O’s talented teens at the weekend.
McAnuff will offer a huge amount on the pitch, but his presence off it could be just as important to the club.
Orient’s academy graduates need plenty of role models and they have another great one in the experienced winger.
He was forced to train with the youth-team during the start of the 2015/16 season by Becchetti and so will have a relationship with a lot of the teenagers in the current first-team squad.
People like Steven Alzate, Josh Koroma and Tristan Abrahams should benefit a huge amount from being taken under McAnuff’s wing.
