Joe Widdowson wants Leyton Orient to enjoy another positive away day at Gateshead in the National League this weekend.

The O’s played at the International Stadium on April 28 and secured an excellent 3-1 win with goals from Macauley Bonne, Jobi McAnuff and Josh Koroma.

All three have started the new campaign strongly too, and O’s are unbeaten after five games and eager to extend that record to six on Saturday against Steve Watson’s Heed, who have 10 points so far.

“I still remember the final game of last season there where we put in a really good performance and got the win, so hopefully we can emulate that,” Widdowson said.

“I believe Gateshead have had quite a good start so I am sure it will be tough, but it is a long way to go and we want to make sure we come back with something.”

Although Orient will travel quite a distance this weekend, they will still take a number of away fans with them up north.

The O’s had 667 at Salford City on the opening day of the season and another 630 made the trip to Kent on August 14 – a Tuesday night – to watch Justin Edinburgh’s team see off Maidstone United by a 2-1 score.

Widdowson admitted the support Orient have received this season and during the previous campaign means a lot to the squad.

He added: “To be honest the fans amaze me every time I walk out and see them. The amount who travel to see us play, especially recently at Maidstone on a Tuesday after work, it is an unbelievable effort from them.

“I appreciate it and I know all the boys appreciate it too and long may it continue. Hopefully we can keep delivering wins and performances for the fans.”

A nice boost for Orient and their supporters recently was the fact Bonne signed a new contract with the club to tie him to the E10 outfit until the summer of 2020.

The former Colchester United ace had plenty of suitors during the off-season, but O’s owners Kent Teague and Nigel Travis turned down all bids for the forward.

Widdowson joked: “He has taken long enough, but he’s eventually signed it! We have all been on at him, but it is nice he has done it.

“He scores so many goals and is a big threat, so as a team we’re delighted he has signed a new contract.”
