The O’s put four past Sutton United and delivered an impressive performance at E10 to leave their new head coach a very happy man

Justin Edinburgh was delighted with his Leyton Orient players after watching them topple National League leaders Sutton United with a 4-1 victory and an excellent display at Brisbane Road.

Macauley Bonne struck twice in each half in between a Matt Harrold header before Tommy Wright pulled one back for the U’s.

A deflected effort from James Dayton ensured Orient had the final say on the match though, and ended their 15-game run without a win in the division.

“Did I enjoy it? Very much so,” said Edinburgh. “Everyone connected to the club has been waiting a long time and to beat the league leaders by that scoreline was the perfect way to cap off my first home game.

“It is not going to happen overnight because you’ve got to work hard, but we’ve had a great week on the training ground and it was a chance for me to continue to implement my ideas, my thoughts and what I’m looking for from the team.

“The performance mirrored what I’m about and the two central midfielders, Craig Clay and Alex Lawless, were excellent. They never lost a second ball, let alone a first one and it gave us impetus and a tone to go on and win the game.”

After an abysmal display at Solihull Moors last weekend, which resulted in a 1-0 loss, this was the perfect response from Edinburgh’s players.

From the moment the first whistle went they were up for it and the commitment and desire on show reaped its reward.

Edinburgh knows there is still a long way to go and despite Orient having a lot of players on their books, he is keen to add some more.

He said: “When people say we have 32 players in our squad, what we need to be mindful of is a lot of them are young players. They had a tough time last season and stepped in when the club needed them, but they had tough times with results.

“What we don’t want to do is to continue to expose them to bad times because someone like Dan Happe has played some really good games, but he hasn’t been on the winning team for a long while.

“He will cherish today and learn from it and you do learn a certain amount from getting beat every week, but we want to be winning games and to have the mindset of winners.

“It’s been difficult and I understand people will say we have 32 players, but a lot of them are young professionals, so I don’t think we can say we are over blessed with experienced players and that’s what I’ll be looking to bring in.”

The former Tottenham Hotspur left-back revealed the two positions he would like to strengthen when given the chance.

And with Josh Coulson taking part in some training this week, defence doesn’t appear a position in need of reinforcements.

Edinburgh added: “We need another striker and a central midfielder – an enforcer, so they are the main positions.

“We’ve had a good week with Josh returning to training, so he is back and should come into the squad for Haringey Borough next week.

“Obviously Alex came back and played a big part today. George Elokobi is closing in on a return and will probably be another two weeks, so I have to be mindful of what is underneath to come back in.

“There are some big players I’ve just named, but I do think we need a couple of additions to the squad.”

Orient took a big step in the right direction this afternoon with the type of display we have not seen enough this season.

However, it must become a regular occurrence now, Edinburgh said: “The fans played their part and got behind the team when it was needed and I’m pleased for everyone.

“Wins are precious and it’s a fantastic one, but it has got to be one of many as we go forward.”
