The O’s head coach reflected on the victory at Harlow, discussed on trial Luke Rooney and confirmed Reece Ottley is the club’s new goalkeeper coach

Justin Edinburgh was encouraged by some of Leyton Orient’s football during their 7-0 win at Harlow Town on Saturday.

The O’s kicked-off the 2018/19 campaign with a comfortable pre-season victory in the basking sunshine.

Josh Koroma scored four times with Macauley Bonne, James Brophy and James Alabi also on target at the Bostik Premier club.

When reflecting on the result, Edinburgh said: “First and foremost we have come through the game with no injuries.

“It was a very good work out and obviously it is pleasing to score some goals, but fundamentally it was a fitness exercise and a chance for virtually everyone to get 45 minutes, so it was really pleasing with some good football at the end.”

Orient included one trialist in their squad and Edinburgh confirmed after the match it was Luke Rooney.

The midfielder played from the 47th minute onwards and after starting sluggishly up front, he looked better when moved out wide.

Rooney, who most recently played for Billericay Town in the Bostik Premier, will be hoping to earn further opportunities at the O’s.

Edinburgh added: “The trialist was Luke Rooney. We are looking at one or two. We would probably like to strengthen more, but we’ll look at that as we go along.

“I think there is always room for improvement, but I always said whoever we bring in needs to add to what we have got rather than be a number.”

During the off-season, O’s made the decision to allow Dean Brill to concentrate purely on his playing career.

After moving to Brisbane Road as goalkeeper coach, the former Luton Town stopper took over the number one role in December when Edinburgh was appointed.

He continued coaching as well during the second half of the campaign, but former Southend United academy goalkeeper coach Reece Ottley will now coach the goalkeepers at Orient during the upcoming season.

“Reece Ottley has joined the coaching team. He was at Harlow working with the goalkeepers, so we are pleased we have that settled,” said Edinburgh.

“He will continue to work with them moving forward and Dean, Sam (Sargeant), Charlie (Grainger) and Arthur (Janata) can concentrate on playing.”
