Pre-season friendly: Middlesbrough 3 Leyton Orient 1

Leyton Orient were beaten in their second pre-season friendly of the summer last night as they went down 3-1 to Championship side Middlesbrough.

The two teams are both out in Spain as they prepare for the new league campaign and the fixture took place in Marbella.

Ian Hendon handed starting opportunities to goalkeeper Charlie Grainger, midfielder Sammy Moore and attacking duo Ollie Palmer and Jay Simpson after they started on the bench against Braintree Town last Friday.

Three trialists started as well and a fourth was on among the substitutes and a tweet from Middlesbrough revealed they were Frazer Shaw, Connor Essam, Alex Woodyard and Peterborough United’s Jack Payne.

Both teams had opportunities to score in the first period, but the opener didn’t come until just before the break.

It was the Championship side that broke the deadlock with Dani Ayala picked out Albert Adomah and he controlled intelligently before flicking past Grainger.

The half time whistle shortly followed and after the interval pressed home their advantage by doubling their lead in the 52nd minute.

Boro’s George Friend linked up with Kike and they helped set up Adam Forshaw, who found the net to make it 2-0.

Dean Cox, on as a substitute, went close to reducing the arrears with a well executed free kick that Middlesbrough’s goalkeeper Tomas Mejias did well to palm away.

But Hendon’s side did manage to get on the scoresheet from the resulting corner when Paul McCallum forced the ball home for his second goal of pre-season.

The next goal went to the Championship side, though, as Kike converted after good work by Friend to give Boro a 3-1 victory.

Orient will next be in action on Saturday when they take on Huddersfield Town, their third friendly fixture under new boss Hendon.
