Nolan hails Northampton Town following four-goal defeat at Brisbane Road

Leyton Orient player-manager Kevin Nolan was full of praise for Northampton Town after they defeated his side 4-0 at Brisbane Road.

After a goalless first half, the Cobblers showed why they are top of League Two with an excellent display following the break.

Rod McDonald put them ahead with an overhead kick before Ricky Holmes doubled their tally with a wonderful volley.

Two late James Collins strike were the cherry on top for the visitors, but it was a disappointing afternoon for the O’s.

Nolan said: “The performance was not good enough. I thought Northampton were fantastic and they showed us what it takes to get out of this division.

“They are doing that and they have come here and been efficient. They were brilliant in what they did and made us look ordinary in the second half.

“It is something our boys can see and if you want to hit the heights and try to get out of this league that is where you have got to get to.”

Orient matched the visitors for the first half and that is something Nolan acknowledged.

He felt Northampton’s work rate was key and had warned his players of that prior to the game.

While 4-0 was harsh on the hosts, the leaders of the division certainly deserved their success after a terrific second half performance.

“The first 45 we matched them but you have to give credit to them because they contained us,” added Nolan.

“For all our good play, we had a few half chances, but they put blocks in when they needed to and cleared it, put it in behind our centre halves and made them turn.

“The two forwards harassed us, the four lads in midfield worked their socks off and we warned our lads before the game that is what they’ll do.

“I said ‘we need to match them for the 90 minutes’ and we haven’t. You see in the second half, how good a team Chris Wilder has built and some of the finishing was fantastic.”

Orient drop to ninth in the table following the loss and are now two points off the play-offs.
