Latest news from the non-league scene
There were mixed fortunes for local non-league clubs playing their first home matches of the new season last night.
Essex Senior League outfit Tower Hamlets, having fallen to a 2-0 defeat in their opening match at Takeley at the weekend, bounced back to beat Basildon United by the same margin at Mile End Stadium.
But Barkingside suffered a second successive loss in Ryman North, going down 1-0 at Cricklefield Stadium against new boys Phoenix Sports following a 3-1 opening-day reverse at Thurrock.
Tower Hamlets took the lead after 19 minutes when Omar Rowe drilled home a shot from the left hand side.
And the home side doubled their advantage six minutes after the restart when Yusuf Ali fired home from the edge of the box, giving Basildon keeper Hayward no chance.
The visitors, having beaten Clapton 2-1 at the weekend, could not find a way back as Hamlets held on for their first points of the new campaign.
Tower Hamlets: Bazell, O’Neal Rowe, Springer, Ibrahim, Ogunoile, Brown, Ali, McLean, Olanipeleun, Teboren (Bamba 75), Omar Rowe. Subs: Surmithran, Neal, Patterson, Adama, Yaslam.
*Barkingside had the first chance of their match, in front of a crowd of 181, but Lee Scott fired over from the edge of the box.
Brian Moses tested the visiting keeper midway through the first half, before Darren Behcet was called upon to keep out a Phoenix header.
And Barkingside fell behind six minutes before the break when Lamar Hurley rode a challenge in the box and sidestepped Behcet before slotting home left-footed.
Gus Gulfer’s side could not find a way back in the second half and will hope it’s a case of third time lucky when they welcome Bury Town at the weekend.
Neighbours Redbridge made the trip to Maldon tonight, looking to build on their 2-1 opening-day with over Witham.
Barkingside: Behcet, Okira, Spencer, Abitogun, Birch, Bangura, Scott, Adebayo, Uzokwe, Lutanya, Moses. Subs: With, Madrejczyk, Scantlebury, Ward, Mbonkwi.
