Hammers midfielder may miss Brighton clash

West Ham midfielder Matt Taylor faces a race to recover from another calf injury in time for the Hammers’ game against Brighton on Monday night.

The former Portsmouth man injured his left calf during West Ham’s 1-0 win at home to Peterborough back in September and missed the Hammers’ next two games against Ipswich and Crystal Palace.

Taylor returned for West Ham’s 4-0 drubbing of Blackpool last Saturday, but was withdrawn just after the hour mark to prevent any recurrence of the injury before Tuesday night’s game at Southampton, where he was taken off with just 20 minutes played.

“It is a blow (losing Taylor),” said Hammers boss Sam Allardyce. “It is always a blow to lose what you consider to be one of your best players.

“He has only just got back from a calf injury and now he’s got a calf injury on the other side.

“Injuries happen to players and squads throughout the season and you have to cope with it.”

Taylor is not the only injury doubt for Monday’s clash at the Amex Stadium, with James Tomkins hoping to recover from a groin problem, while Carlton Cole should be in contention if he successfully overcomes his persistent knee ligament problem.
