When West Ham were struggling there was a chance that ex-player Andre Ayew could end up as the top scorer this season.

Fortunately, that embarrassment has been avoided as both Marko Arnautovic and Javier Hernandez have moved on to seven goals for the campaign.

Indeed, ‘Chicharito’ could have been well clear after he was denied a hat-trick against Watford as his form continues to improve.

First, he had a goal ruled out for offside which was an extremely debatable call, for which he should have been given the benefit of the doubt.

Then in the second half, he dribbled into the box with just the keeper to beat and most expected the net to bulge, only for Orestis Karnezis to grab it.

But for the Mexico international, it was a great day.

“It was the perfect afternoon,” said the 29-year-old, who headed home Michail Antonio’s cross to give West Ham the lead.

“Compared to the last game that we lost at Brighton, thankfully we did a pretty good performance.

“Not only did Marko and I score, but the whole team ran with high intensity and we showed that we wanted the three points.”

Team-mate Pablo Zabaleta praised the contribution of the ‘Little Pea’ after the 2-0 win.

“It was good to see ‘Chicharito’ getting on the scoresheet as well,” he said.”There was a lot of speculation in January that he was looking to move somewhere else.

“But he has always been professional, he kept training well and focused and at the end of the day, it was important to keep him as we know what he can do for us.

“He proved again that when he is in the box, he is a very good player.”

The secret is support for the striker. The emergence of Marko Arnautovic has given him someone to work with and Hernandez is delighted with that.

“Marko is an unbelievable all round player,” said the 29-year-old who will be heading to Russia for the World Cup this summer.

“He gives you a lot of confidence when you play up front with a player like him. We have a good understanding with each other.”

There were some who were questioning the ability of Hernandez at West Ham, this reporter included, but most of them, including me, are now eating their words.
