Man City semi-final draw dampens West Ham high of dumping Spurs out of cup

West Ham manager Sam Allardyce has admitted he is not relishing the prospect of travelling to Manchester City in their Capital One Cup semi-final first-leg clash.

The Hammers booked their spot in the last four on Wednesday night after coming from behind to earn a second successive win at Tottenham this season, with Matt Jarvis and Modibo Maiga scoring in the final 10 minutes to stun managerless Spurs, who had gone ahead midway through the second half thanks to Emmanuel Adebayor.

Allardyce’s side were pitted against title contenders City, with the first leg set to take place in the week commencing January 6 at the Etihad Stadium, where the Sky Blues have won all eight games in the Premier League, scoring 35 goals in the process.

“It’s a tough one, isn’t it? If it had been one leg and if it was a draw and it pulled out that it was at our place, not at theirs, it would have been nice,” said Allardyce, whose team’s only league success on their travels was a 3-0 win at Spurs, while they are hovering just above the relegation zone.

“Over two legs it makes it a little bit more difficult when you know Man City have scored on average four goals every home game.”

The two Manchester clubs were kept apart, with United drawn to face Sunderland, who will host the first leg before the return clash at Old Trafford two weeks later in the week commencing January 20.

Allardyce hopes his Hammers, who had won just two of the 10 matches between visits to White Hart Lane, can gain a much-needed fillip from the triumph.

“It was a fantastic victory for us,” Allardyce said following the match.

“It’s a victory we can enjoy tonight, but tomorrow it’s up and at it again and getting ready for Manchester United.

“With a resilient performance like we showed tonight against Manchester United, hopefully we might get something there. Hopefully it will kick us on.”
