It is almost two and a half years since West Ham waved goodbye to Upton Park and all that history.

So has a new book on the history of the famous stadium already missed the boat?

Well, not when it is written in such stunning detail and with such love as a new book by renowned West Ham historian, journalist and writer Tony Hogg, who hails from Romford.

‘A Castle on Green Street’ is a weighty tome and this is only the first volume, but it is the definitive guide to West Ham’s life at Upton Park.

What stands out are the stunning photographs, some never seen before, which light up the pages.

There is the story of how the Hammers came to move in to Upton Park back in 1904, the way they built it up into a big stadium over the years and the way they thrived in the Football League.

All the while there are pictures plotting their path to success, showing the players of the day as they advanced to the first ever Wembley final.

The stories that Hogg gleans from the two World Wars are fascinating, including Upton Park’s role in D-Day and how it almost went very badly wrong – a V1 rocket hitting the stadium and then the beginning of the great side that West Ham began to build following the lessons learned from a visit from AC Milan.

There are programme covers, pictures from a host of magazine covers featuring West Ham stars and all the time, the author, with immaculate research, gives us the stories to go with it.

It is not cheap at £30 but has close to 400 glossy pages and seems well worth the price.

If you are a West Ham fan or even just a history buff, this is the book for you.
