Hammers star Billy Bonds will be inducted at the National Football Museum

West Ham legend Billy Bonds is to be inducted into the National Football Museum’s Hall of fame.

The club’s record appearance holder played for 21 seasons at Upton Park, twice lifting the FA Cup for the club in 1975 and 1980 and being the heart and soul of the club for so many years.

He was also a youth coach and manager of the Hammers during his time, presiding over successful promotion campaigns.

Bonds will be inducted alongside eight other players in a special ceremony at the museum in Manchester on September 21.

The other inductees are Steven Gerrard, former Hammer Frank Lampard, Bob Wilson, plus Charlie Roberts, Kelly Smith and Rachel Yankey from the women’s game.

The late Wales manager Gary Speed will also be honoured.

The inductees were decided by a host of the game’s greats and Hall of Fame members including; Sir Geoff Hurst, Gordon Banks, Sir Bobby Charlton, Peter Schmeichel, Roger Hunt, Kevin Keegan, Bryan Robson, Francis Lee, Trevor Francis, Ossie Ardiles, George Cohen, Norman Hunter, Sue Lopez and Marianne Spacey, making the former West Ham player’s achievement even more special.

Kevin Haygarth, Interim Director of the National Football Museum, said: “We are delighted to bestow Billy Bonds with the honour of a place in the Hall of Fame.

“Bonds was the epitome of West Ham United: a committed, much-loved leader on and off the field. We’re sure fans will welcome Bonds’ inclusion in the Hall of Fame, alongside Hammers greats like Bobby Moore and Martin Peters.”

A thoroughly deserved accolade for the great man.
