West Ham United boss Manuel Pellegrini says it was an important to show the fans they want to do well in the Carabao Cup this season as they sealed a comfortable 8-0 victory against Macclesfield Town.

Braces from Robert Snodgrass and Grady Diangana as well as solo efforts from Ryan Fredericks, Michail Antonio, Angelo Ogbonna and Lucas Perez sealed the Hammers progress into the fourth round of the cup competition.

“I don’t know if it’s the biggest win of my career but it was important and a good win because we must make a difference against a team that plays in the Premier League and a team in League Two,” the 65-year-old said.

“But you don’t always do it because a lot of times you underestimate your rival and think they are going to win by walking.

“That is why I am happy for the players because they understand that with the pace that we played with tonight (Wednesday) we will improve what we have been doing in the last games.”

The Chilean, who has won the cup competition twice during his time with Manchester City, believes it’s important to have a good run in the competition.

“I don’t know what happened with past managers. I think that fans always want to see good players, and they want to win.

“That’s more important.”

The former Real Madrid boss believes his side’s first goal from Michail Antonio opened the game up for his side and let them run riot.

“Yes, I think that maybe the first goal released a bit of our pressure but our team played well from the first minute because it’s never easy to find space when you have eight or nine players in front of your opponent’s box.

“We had the patience to continue working. We had a lot of different movements around their box. Finally, we score.”
