Galway-born globetrotter Peter McDonagh returns to York Hall for a second consecutive appearance

Galway-born globetrotter Peter McDonagh has enjoyed spells at various East London gyms during his pro career, and after three title fights in his last five fights, he returns to York Hall on Friday night for a six-round clash.

The 32-year-old light welterweight is in action on promoter Mick Helliet's latest show at the Bethnal Green venue - marking the first time in six years that fight-anywhere McDonagh has appeared at the same venue in two consecutive contests.

Last time out, McDonagh battled Morden campaigner Lennie Daws at York Hall in April, dropping a tight points verdict in a 10-round tussle with the English light-weltereight title at stake.

He was in action at Dublin's National Stadium earlier this year, where he lost on points to Andy Murray in an Irish light-welterweight title clash.

And in his previous outing, McDonagh had been in Milan challenging Italian Giuseppe Lauri for the EBU-EU European crown - a contest he also narrowly lost.

Yet McDonagh has enjoyed his share of winning nights in a seven-year pro career - and he has dented the hopes of some bright prospects along the way, including his last two fights in 2008.

He shocked previously unbeaten Lee Purdy last December in a battle for the Southern Area light-welterweight belt at Brentwood, and two months earlier crossed the Atlantic to upset the odds by overcoming bright Canadian prospect Constantin Florescu over six rounds in Toronto.

He will start as favourite in Friday night's clash against Plymouth's Jimmy Briggs in a six-round contest on a bill that also features East London light heavyweight JJ Oujederie.

Hackney's Wayne Alwan Arab will also be looking to continue a run which has seen him record eight straight successes when he faces Blackpool's Mark Nilsen in another six-rounder on Friday night.

Margate super middleweight Jack Morris, Woolwich's Eder Kurti and Cheshunt welterweight Bobby Gladman are also in action.

Other bouts feature light welterweight duo Tony Owen and Phil Gill and light heavyweight Joe Smyth, while a four-round duel pairs light welterweights Gavin Tait and Johnny Greaves.

Tickets for Friday's York Hall show are available from Mickey Helliet on 07843 636920.
