More than 80 people enjoyed riding the waves at a special disability day at Lee Valley White Water Centre.

Individuals and groups from London, Hertfordshire and Essex, tackled the Waltham Cross venue’s white water rapids in rafts or had a go at kayaking, canoeing and stand up paddle boarding on the lake recently.

The day enabled people with a wide range of disabilities to get out on the water with the support of the centre’s fully qualified and experienced raft guides and staff.

The groups were allowed to experience speeding down the 300m long Olympic course where Team GB won gold and silver in the London 2012 Canoe Slalom Events or to have a go at rafting down the 160m Legacy Course.

They could also choose instead to paddle on the flat water lake in kayaks and canoes.

Paskell Blackwell, general manager, said: “This day has been a terrific success, with many of those taking part trying out things that they have never done before.

“We believe that everyone should be able to access all our activities and services and this special day showed how challenges like this can benefit a variety of different groups, promoting health and fitness and boosting confidence.”

Following the special day at Lee Valley White Water Centre, enthusiasts who wish to continue with watersports have a chance to try out a full course with new paddle ability kayak sessions available to everyone, regardless of their disability.

The course, open to people of all ages, is being part funded by the Community Access Fund.

It runs for six consecutive weeks starting today from 6pm.

The course has been discounted from the normal £90 for six weeks, to £30 and will be taught on the lake.
