Team manager Jahid Ahmed expressed his delight after Tower Hamlets secured a date at Lord’s following their weekend success at the London Youth Games Indoor Cricket qualifying competition.

Ahmed — a former fast bowler for Essex — saw his young charges win both their group matches at Harrow Leisure Centre against Kensington & Chelsea and Barnet.

That saw them finish top of their group and earn their place in the Lord’s finals on March 3 for the first time since 2010.

“I’m very proud of the boys and how they played,” said Ahmed. “The boys dominated the matches and the whole team have done a great job.”

Tower Hamlets had a tough first game against Barnet, but came out on top winning 120-117 thanks to newcomer Rabbi Uddin.

The boys had an easier time against Kensington & Chelsea, winning the match with a score of 113 runs from 10 overs.

And now Ahmed admits his team will be upping the ante in training to be ready for their big date at the home of cricket.

“We’ll be playing a lot of indoor games to prepare for the finals,” he added.

“We were a little under-prepared this weekend, but we’ll be training two-three times a week until its competition time. “Despite my worries, the way we came out was amazing. It’s been a real team effort and I can’t wait to go to Lord’s.”

Meanwhile, Newham bowed out at the group stages after finishing runners-up in their group.

All three of their matches were tight, losing by two runs against fifth-seeds Havering and eventual finalists Hackney, before winning by three runs as they took on Croydon.

This weekend will see the girls’ qualifying rounds take place at Harrow Leisure Centre where eight more places in the Lord’s finals are up for grabs.

Newham are in group D alongside fourth seeds Haringey, Richmond-upon-Thames and Barnet, while Tower Hamlets face Wandsworth, Redbridge and fifth seeds Sutton in their group.
