Lakeside Hammers boss Will Pottinger is looking forward to the challenge of Championship speedway this season.

The 30-year-old, who is also in charge of National League outfit Cradley Heathens, is delighted to make the step-up and believes the side has the potential to achieve success in his first year as manager.

“I’m immensely looking forward to it, it’s a great opportunity for me to manage a Championship team and we’ve got a good set of riders, so I think we’ve got a decent chance of doing well this year.

“You always need to push yourself and get out your comfort zones, I mean it’s three hours down the road for me here, but it’s something I’m prepared to do and put the effort in and make the most of the opportunity that has been given to me.

“It’s not really an opportunity that you turn down when it’s there so I’m really looking forward to it and we’ll see how we can get on.

“It’s great that we’re finally here and getting crack as it seems to have been a long winter.”

Pottinger got to watch his squad take to the track in the RICO Spring Classic event on Friday night and praised Jon Cook for the squad he has assembled at the Arena Essex Raceway.

“I came into the party a bit late when it came to team building, Jon had already sort of agreed the deals with the riders, but I can’t fault him for the riders that he’s signed.

“He’s picked some good riders, who are capable of improving and are already good riders at this level, so I think we can develop a good home track advantage potentially and that will be key if we want to be successful.”

The manager believes his side have every right to be challenging for silverware this campaign and hopes the team spirit can play a part.

“Of course, you always want to do well and win trophies and I think we’re more than capable of doing that.

“There’s good potential here to have home track advantage and if we can build that over the first couple of meetings I think we can do very well.

“We’ve got a group of riders who are all good lads and get a long well together so it all bodes well.”
