The Vortex Hammers make the trip to the Foxhall Stadium (2.15pm) before returning to the Arena Essex Raceway (8pm) as they look to get off to a strong start to the season.

Captain Richard Lawson revealed how excited he is to be back at the Purfleet-based club after a season away and that he has high expectations of his side.

“I’m really pleased to be back, I love this place, and it’s been good to me in the past,” he said.

“The fans are great and I’m excited to be back here, it’s unfortunate we had to miss a year, but that’s how things work out.

“We’ve got a good team and can’t wait to get going.”

The Cumbrian-born racer is confident his squad will be strong at home and is also hoping he can continue his good form round the track, adding: “I think we can make it a good home track, hopefully I can pick up where I left off and I think we’ve got an exciting team that should produce some good racing.

“Once we’ve had a couple of meetings at home and get everyone figured out there, I’m confident we’ll be a force to be reckoned with.”

The 32-year-old, who travels miles to race for the side, has revealed the fans make it worth all the commitment.

“I don’t live too far now I moved to Evesham, which is a couple of hours, but the fans are great and I even had fans last year that were coming to meetings just to see me,” he said.

“I really do appreciate their efforts and hopefully we can reward them with some trophies.”

Lawson revealed he has set no personal targets other than to help the Hammers in whatever way he possibly can.

“Not targets as such, I just try to put in 100 per cent every meeting and when it comes down to the matches that we need a win hopefully I can be the man that look at for that,” he said.

“I take my captaincy seriously and try help out the younger guys, so all round I think it should be pretty positive.”

The former Workington Comets man has also set his sights on earning a spot in Team Great Britain’s World Cup squad, adding: “I felt like I’ve been close a couple of years, but not got the nod so hopefully I can impress this year and get in there.”
