Lakeside Hammers kicked off their season with a win over old rivals Eastbourne Eagles in the first leg of the Lee Richardson Memorial Trophy.

The Vortex Hammers picked up a 48-42 victory over the Sussex outfit to begin life in the National League, thanks to maximum men Ben Morley and Zac Wajtknecht.

The Purfleet outfit will have to hope for a big performance in the second leg to get their hands on the silverware this evening.

Heat one began with captain Morley roaring his way to victory in the re run, after his partner George Hunter was exclude for falling off first time out.

Both sides looked extremely even to start the meeting as heat two and three both ended in 3-3’s.

It wasn’t until the fourth race that Lakeside found themselves in front, when Wajtknecht stormed his way to victory, following a re run where Eagles reserve Tom Brennan was excluded.

The teams were soon back looking even with three consecutive 3 all stalemates, meaning Lakeside were leading 25-23 at the end of eight races.

Thing didn’t seem to change either as the teams continued with another four consecutive stalemates, which included two riders racing off 15 metres, following them touching the tapes.

Going into heat 13 the score still remained just two points different, but that soon changed as the high-flying duo of Morley and Wajtknecht, flew out the rate and stormed their way to a 5-1 victory.

The Eagles returned the favour to bring back the score within two, after Mattie Bates and Tom Brennan picked up a 5-1 of their own, although it took a lot of hard work and battling.

Ben Morley and Zac Wajtknecht kept their unbeaten night alive, as they beat off Georgie Wood and Mark Baseby in the final race of the night to win 48-42.

Ben Morley 15 (5), George Hunter 2 (4), David Mason 11 (4), Alfie Bowtell 2+1 (4), Zac Wajtknecht 13+2 (5), Nic Laurence 3 (4), Ryan MacDonald 2+1 (4)

Mark Basey 6 (5), Kelsey Dugard 2+1 (3), Connor Coles 4+4 (4), Mattie Bates 9 (4), Georgie Wood 9 (5), Charley Powell3+1 (4), Tom Brennan 9+2 (5)
