Lee Valley 4 Haringey Racers 5

Lee Valley Lions came up short in their London derby with Haringey after some late drama at Lea Bridge Road.

Lions went into the National League Division Two South East match on the back of a 5-0 cup loss at Peterborough the night before and fell behind in the eighth minute as Solomon Smith struck on a Racers powerplay, assisted by Ben Osborne, after Robin Young had been called for interference.

But Haringey’s Jack Lee was then binned for tripping and Alistair Band picked up a holding penalty, which allowed Nick Alley to level as Lions enjoyed a man advantage.

The scoreline remained unchanged during a scoreless middle period, as Lions edged the shot count 12-11, but Haringey regained the lead early in the final session.

Chris Norris was binned for roughing, but the visitors struck while shorthanded as Philippe Mueller beat James Andrew.

Mueller claimed his second goal of the night four minutes later to put Racers 3-1 up.

But Lions roared to get back on terms as Alley potted his second goal of the contest in the 54th minute, then saw James Hepburn convert on a powerplay chance after Tomas Gilheany was called for slashing.

But Lee Valley were then given a bench minor penalty at 56:39 for having too many men on the ice and Racers made them pay as Lee netted on the powerplay with only 92 seconds left in the match.

Haringey’s joy was shortlived this time, though, as Lions rallied to make it 4-4 just 20 seconds later through Chris Fox.

But that was not the end of the drama as Haringey claimed victory with just 21 seconds remaining when Matt Brown netted their fifth.
