Bethnal Green United have made history this week after recording a maiden victory in the FA Vase in the club's first match in the competition

Bethnal Green United have made history this week after recording a maiden victory in the FA Vase in the club's first match in the competition.

Goals from Marlon Campbell and Danny Sabroche secured a 2-1 win over Spartan League outfit Ampthill Town as the Greens added a fresh chapter to their stunning start to the new campaign.

The East End club, who won promotion to the Essex Senior League last season, are undefeated in all competitions and extended that streak by advancing to the second qualifying round in their inaugural Vase appearance on Saturday.

Bethnal Green boss Justin Gardner praised his team for achieving "the biggest result" in the club's nine-year history.

"I keep having to pinch myself because we're in dream world at the moment," Gardner said.

"This is the biggest result in the club's history and we are putting Bethnal Green and Tower Hamlets on the map.

"Some of the teams we're playing have been around for more than a hundred years but our club is breaking new ground every week.

"It's unbelievable how quickly this club is growing and I'm very proud for everyone involved with the club - the players, my coaching staff and especially the chairman."

Despite being paired with a club who have reached the third round of the Vase on three separate occasions in their 128-year history, Bethnal Green were not overawed by the occasion and made a bright start at Ampthill Park.

Striker Campbell had a sight of goal in the opening minutes but opted to pass instead of shoot and the chance went begging.

But the in-form forward made no mistake after 17 minutes when Alfred Kamara's long free-kick was flicked on by Steve Willis, allowing Campbell to chest the ball down and volley home a stunning effort to break the deadlock.

Campbell should have doubled his tally midway through the half but shot straight at the keeper and Sabroche headed over from Kamara's cross 10 minutes before the break as Bethnal Green continued to dominate.

Ampthill struggled to gain a foothold in the game but could have grabbed a shock equaliser seconds before half-time, only for Greens keeper Ashley King to produce a magnificent double save to preserve the lead.

Kamara continued to dictate proceedings in midfield after the break and could have got the goal his tireless display deserved, but Campbell's final pass was too high and Ampthill cleared.

But Sabroche did double the advantage midway through the half with a long-range effort from a tight angle that beat the Ampthill keeper at his near post.

Campbell, Kamara and substitute Marvin Abegunde all had chances to make the game safe but Bethnal Green were forced to endure a nervy final few minutes after Ampthill pulled a goal back following a defensive mix-up late on.

United held on to seal a historic triumph and set up a showdown with Hellenic Premier Division outfit Old Woodstock Town in the second qualifying round.

Bethnal Green continued their unbeaten start to the season on Monday night with a 1-0 win over Southend Manor in Essex Senior League Cup Group F.

Anton Stevenson netted the winning goal after nine minutes on his debut, while goalkeeper Abraham Mahmood produced a man of the match display.

Bethnal Green visit Bowers & Pitsea on Saturday (3pm).
