Cole can emerge as key player for Three Lions - Zola

Gianfranco Zola is convinced that Carlton Cole can make the step up to international football after the Hammers striker received his first England call-up this week.

The 25-year-old was selected in Fabio Capello's squad for the friendly with Spain following his prolific form last month, which saw him hit the net in five successive league games.

Cole has scored 10 goals for the Hammers this season, reaching double figures for the first time in his career, and West Ham boss Zola is confident the improving forward can develop into a key performer for England.

"I think Carlton will be a very good player for England," Zola said. "He has great potential. He's quick, strong and has very good technical ability. He has everything in his bag."
