Poplar Legends have pipped Sylhet FC in the race for the Inner London Football League 40 years plus championship.

Sylhet had to win convincingly to take home the title but a rugged defensive display from Poplar saw the title go home to E14.

The latest round of games was the title decider as both Poplar Legends and Sylhet Fc battled it out at full pelt.

Although Pervez Chowdhury’s side created many chances Poplar held off the onslaught to be crowned the champions of season 2 by three points.

The veterans league which takes place every Monday 8pm to 10pm at Stepney Green 4G also saw Poplar Legends, who boasted celebrated veterans such as Stepney legend Forid Ahmed, Jowel Miah, Khalis Miah, Anwar, Hamid Yusuf, Runu Miah, Nazrul, Shuhel, Rahul, Masud Miah and Rekhon Ali finish the season unbeaten and take the title.

ILFL vice chair Rashid Ai said: “As expected it was a very high tempo end to end game with lot of chances for both sides.

“There was lot of spectators and we all shared the view that it was hard to tell these were all 40 years plus players.

“Once again credit to all the teams that participated - Poplar Legends, Sylhet FC, CAG, Newark, G7 and Riverside.”

Victorious Poplar manager Shofiqul Islam added: “The forty plus League is a means of keeping individuals still engaged in football which in turn keeps them active, fit and enjoy a social gathering.

“I’m proud my team and the consistency they showed throughout to finish unbeaten.”

Season three will commence at the end of August.
