Sporting Bengal legends lend support

Sporting Bengal rolled back the years as the renowned Tower Hamlets club paraded an array of legends for a charitable cause.

With the Rohingya people fleeing Myanmar, global communities have united to add their voices in condemning atrocities being committed against innocent men, women and children.

The game at Stepney pitted two Sporting teams of under-40s and over-40s, with the younger group showing no such charity to their older rivals as they stormed to a 5-0 win.

Following the success of the fixture, organised by several BFA legends, it is planned to make this particular charity fundraiser a regular annual event to support different causes.

Aftar Ali, coach of Sporting under-40s, said: “The boys put on a great performance for a very important cause. It was wonderful to see so many members of the Sporting Bengal family out here wanting to help the Rohingya.”

Sporting legend Sana Miah, one of the key organisers, added: “We wanted to do something to help the humanitarian crisis in Myanmar which is along the Bangladesh border. This was our way of showing support.

“Our target was to raise £1,500, with each player asked to donate a minimum of £50, but their generosity means we have doubled that. The success of this event has inspired us to consider arranging charity matches more regularly to support important causes.”

Also on the night, FC London played BFAUK Vets, and so far the game has raised over £3,000.

All monies has been donated to CAP Foundation and Lonely Orphans charities to directly aid the work both groups are undertaking with the Rohingya.
