Latest news from the Essex Senior League

Sporting Bengal United celebrated their first league win in eight outings after a 2-1 success over high-flying Wadham Lodge at Mile End Stadium last night.

But east London neighbours Newham slumped to a 4-0 defeat against Enfield at their temporary Tilbury home on a disappointing night for joint managers Shamrez Darr and Kevin Lucas.

Bengal had bowed out of the FA Vase at the weekend, losing 3-1 after extra time to Sleaford Town.

But they took the lead just before the half-hour mark against Lodge as Abdisamad Mohammed struck.

Tunde Adewunyi beat the offside trap to net for the second match in succession, with a cheeky chip over the visiting keeper, to make it 2-0 at half time and take his tally to 14 goals in 13 games.

But Charlie Georgiou hit back for the visitors with a quarter of an hour remaining and the hosts were reduced to 10 men when Bordzan was sent off for a bad tackle.

Bengal managed to hold on to their slender lead as Lodge saw a late free-kick cleared off the line and victory lifted Anwar Uddin’s men up to 12th, while Lodge remain in third place despite defeat.

Uddin tweeted: “Delighted with the @SportingBengal result this evening, so pleased the players have been reward for their efforts against a top team #3pts.”

Newham had let a two-goal lead slip at Enfield on Saturday, going down 3-2, and were well beaten in the quick return meeting at Chadfields.

Alex Salmon opened the scoring after only seven minutes and doubled Enfield’s advantage, before Michael Hopkin made it 3-0 just before the break.

Gareth Madden completed the scoring on 75 minutes as Enfield moved off the bottom of the table to sit level on 10 points with Newham, while Waltham Forest are now in the basement.

Sporting Bengal make the short trip to Ilford on Saturday, while Newham are without a fixture.

Clapton are set to host FC Romania, who beat Eton Manor 6-3 last night, as Tower Hamlets welcome Enfield to Mile End and London Bari visit Wadham Lodge.
