Essex Senior League neighbours Sporting Bengal United and Tower Hamlets were able to draw the positives from their last matches of the season on Saturday.

Imrul Gazi’s Bengal held promotion hopefuls Basildon United to a goalless draw at Stansted’s Hargrave Park, with Mile End Stadium unavailable, to clinch 10th place on 50 points, their best-ever haul.

And Tower Hamlets picked up a point on their travels to Burnham Ramblers to ensure they were just one point behind their east London rivals in 11th.

Bengal were looking for a fifth successive win to complete their campaign, having beaten Stansted, Clapton, Barkingside and Redbridge all by 2-1 scorelines.

But they could not find a way through the Bees defence and had to settle for a share of the spoils, with Gazi tweeting: “Fair result today v an organised @official_bufc - that’s it, dun for the season & think we @SportingBengal can be very proud at the effort, To finish the season so strongly 4 wins & a draw is a great effort.”

Hamlets had ended an eight-game losing run with a 2-2 draw at Wadham Lodge on Thursday night.

But they fell behind at Leslie Field, before ensuring they did not finish empty-handed thanks to an equaliser from James Ross.

The goalscorer took to social media to tweet: “So the season is over for @TowerHamletsFC. It’s difficult coming to a new club through trials, knowing absolutely nobody, proving yourself all voer again (the struggles of a nomad). But I’ve loved being part of and contributing to this family.”

Coach Francesco Zabotti added: “Truly enjoyed today game played good football and loads of chances, walked away with a point and a lot of promise for next season. @TowerHamletsFC happy to end the season on a positive, looking forward to the time off now.”
