Tower Hamlets will give their youngsters a chance as they face Great Wakering Rovers in the second round of the Errington Challenge Cup.

The Mile End-based club travel to the Essex Senior League high-flyers this evening (7.45pm kick-off) as they bid to progress into the third round of the cup competition.

Joint-manager AJ Ashanike has revealed they’ll be using the match to give the youngsters a run out and a chance to stake their place in the first-team for Saturday’s match.

“I’m going to be using nine of the youth team players tonight who impressed in the FA Youth Cup and hopefully they can impress us and get themselves on the team sheet for Saturday,” he said.

“The only first-team players we’ve got for this evening is Igor Furtado and James Ross, other than that we’ll have younth players.”

The manager admits the youth team impressed him in their 3-0 defeat to Leyton Orient youth team in the FA Youth Cup earlier this month.

“They done really well and I was really impressed with them in that match,” Ashanike said.

“Since pre-season when I watched them play I have been keeping a close eye on them as there is some good players coming through.

“Antonio Monteiro has been in and out the first-team from our youth set-up and doing well.

“Briggs Ojemen has played at left-back recently for the first-team and he has been doing really well for the age of 16.”

Ashanike believes it will be a tough test for his youngsters as he praised how strong Great Wakering Rovers have been so far this season.

“We saw on Saturday how good they are as they put seven past Enfield.

“Last year I played against Great Wakering when I was at Aveley and the manager has managed to keep most of that team together, so they’re very strong.”

They go into the clash on the back of a 1-0 defeat to neighbours Clapton in the Essex Senior League.

The Tons netted an 82nd minute winner thanks to Akin Obamakin to settle a very tight at The Old Spotted Dog on Saturday.

“I’m very disappointed about the score line,” he said.

“In my opinion we didn’t deserve to win, but we didn’t deserve to lose either.

“Both teams teams were pretty poor in the match, but when you have seven first-team players out you would have taken a point away from home, but we didn’t and that’s disappointing.”
