Sporting Bengal United boss Anwar Uddin was thrilled his team won ugly against Newham in the Essex Senior League on Saturday.

The 34-year-old couldn’t take charge of the match due to his work as the Diversity and Campaigns manager at the Football Supporters’ Federation.

He was at his old club Dagenham & Redbridge for their fixture with Yeovil Town, which was ‘Daggers against Racism Day’.

But his assistant Steve Clark looked on as Bengal beat their local rivals 2-0 with Jeffrey Nguede and Tunde Adewunmi on target.

Uddin said: “I was delighted with the result, it was a really important win for us actually. Newham are a side near the bottom and we got three points from our last match at home so it was great to get back-to-back victories at Mile End.

“The lads that are continuously here, the ones not injured, suspended or unavailable due to work, have been doing enough to get us wins.

“It wasn’t pretty, but I would much rather that then play well and draw like we have done on numerous occasions this season.

“We are a club that has a philosophy and our style of play doesn’t change so unless you are a new player, we don’t need to go over things all the time. It is like a steam train so even if I am not there, we just carry on.”

The win for Bengal was a major boost and so was the return of forward Adewunmi on Saturday.

He has been absent of late due to a number of reasons, but Uddin was pleased his decision to include him in the squad paid off.

And it left the former West Ham United youngster reflecting on their bad luck when it comes to attacking options.

Forward Carlos Aoldirve began the campaign in fine form before injury ruled him out for the rest of the year.

“Tunde has been unavailable for six weeks and hasn’t even trained, but because we were so low on numbers. I put him on the bench and said try play 10-15 minutes if you can and he has come on and scored,” added Uddin.

“We had a lot of bad luck with our strikers, Carlos our Colombian was on fire at the start of the season, but broke his ankle.

“Afterwards we replaced him with Tunde and he is a player that can definitely play higher like he did last season with me at Maldon & Tiptree. He has been fantastic this season, but his suspension and injuries have ruined his flow of late.

“But he got the all clear from an MRI scan recently and I am hoping he can have a strong finish now and then decide what is best for him in the summer.”
