Westferry Youth are now just one win away from winning the Tower Hamlets Youth League title after they punished Shadwell’s defensive errors in one of the matches of the season last weekend.

Saif Mohammed’s under-16s were in control from the start and goals from Shueb Rahman, Jamiul Rashid and Taher Mahmood earned them a crucial 3-1 success.

After a strong start, it was no surprise when Westferry took a first-half lead as Juned Ahmed pounced on a loose ball and found Shueb Rahman, who curled into the top corner.

Jamiul Rashid made it two after he slotted into the back of the net having robbed the ball from the Shadwell goalkeeper.

Shadwell found it tough to cope with the speed, pace and power of Taher Mahmood, Shueb Rahman and Jamiul Rashid in the second half as their quick, sharp and effective passing play made it difficult for their rivals.

When Shadwell did attack, Tommy Nguyen ensured solidity at the back for Westferry by leading the line with discipline after captain Abaan Patel was subbed off due to injury.

Mohammed’s youngsters made it 3-0 when Shafiiq Shipkoylee fired a cross into the direction of Mahmood and he controlled before adding a classy finish.

Shadwell pulled a goal back after a lapse of concentration, but no comeback was to materialise as Westferry held on to beat their fiercest rivals.

Mohammed said: “Our boys showed great character, fighting spirit, a never say die attitude and 100 per cent work rate.

“We stuck together as a team and showed the true meaning of the colours we wear. We need to carry this attitude into our final game and work even harder in training, as we are almost at the level we want to be and we need to support each other in every step we take moving forward.”

Man of the match Shueb Rahman added: “We are one win away from winning the league, our team look so strong and sharp, but we need to keep our focus and go again on Saturday.”

Westferry will have the chance to lift the title when they face Aberfeldy Youth with a win or draw enough to secure league success this weekend.
