Academy squad of 16 win 18 medals in Glasgow at Emirates Arena

Liam Veras was in stunning form for Veras Academy when a group of 16 travelled to Glasgow for the British Four Nationals Karate Championships at the prestigious Emirates Arena.

The squad returned home with no less than 18 medals and a fifth position out of 45 on the results table. The medals were for both Kata and Kumite.

Competitor of the day was Liam Veras who won no less than three gold medals and silver, making him a triple British Champion.

His brothers Luan Veras and Luca Veras and their mother Patricia Perote also became 2015 British Champions making history in the British Championships.

Liam Veras and Luca Veras also won gold in 9 years and under - Pairs Kata as did Luan Veras and team mate Seyhan Cinar in 10 to 13 yrs - Pairs Kata.

Elite competitor Jasmine Pomeroy brought back three silver medals and a bronze after putting in first class performances in each of her four events.

Current England champion Ben Pomeroy also did a fantastic job to bring home a bronze medal to add to his collection.

Veras Academy’s youngest and eldest competitors Jack Walsh and Mette McLarney also won medals.

Lulu Brown, Luke Kavanagh, Donna Blake, Isaac Dillon, Ismail Cinar, Makae Rosengrove and John Joe Field also competed with terrific performances and were unlucky not to medal.

The final result showed that England won overall with 155 medals, Scotland came second place with 149, Wales won 6 medals and and Northern Ireland won 2.

Veras Academy Sensei Raphael Veras praised his team and admitted he couldn’t have asked them to put in any more effort.

He said: “With Karate being a contender for acceptance into the Olympics, the event was closely scrutinized by Sport England officials who ensured that the highest levels of judging and refereeing were upheld.

“The competition was a tough one and I am extremely proud of all my team, those who won medals and those who didn’t. They all tried their very best and I couldn’t ask for more.”
