National League: Peterborough 5 Lee Valley 1
Lee Valley Lions were brought back down to earth with defeat at Peterborough.
Buoyed by their win over Invicta a week earlier, Lions fell behind inside four minutes as Bradley Moore put the Islanders ahead on an early powerplay with Grant Bignell serving a slashing penalty.
Shaun Yardley doubled the home side’s lead in the ninth minute and it was 3-0 soon after when Connor Stokes got in on the act.
Lions were outshot 23-6 in the first period – and 66-12 overall on the night – but goalie James Tipple shone between their pipes.
Tempers boiled over just before the midway mark, with Lee Valley’s James Hepburn and Matthew Drake earning double minors for roughing along with Peterborough duo Leon Groom and Dale Jowett.
Soon after Stuart Spence clashed with Yardley, who picked up an additional 10-minute misconduct penalty, but Lions could not make their powerplay count and fell further behind as Nathan Pollard potted Peterborough’s fourth while they were a man short.
Pollard struck again in the final period to make it 5-0, but Lions got themselves on the scoreboard eventually as Drake netted from Mark Robinson’s pass in the 52nd minute.
Lions are back on ice next Saturday (November 8), when they welcome Invicta to Lee Valley.
