The London Cobras were crowned British American Football League Division One champions after the South London outfit overcame the East Kilbride Pirates at BritBowl XXIII on Sunday thanks to key contributions from the club's East London contingent.

Tower Hamlets gridiron star Moses Sangobiyi made an endzone interception and Hackney ace Ariel Mofondo was named the game's Defensive MVP at Doncaster's Keepmoat Stadium as the Cobras recorded an 8-0 shutout of the Pirates to complete a perfect season.

Devar Gayle scored the lone touchdown for the Cobras, who also recorded a two-point safety when a botched Pirates' snap flew out of the back of the end zone in the fourth quarter.

Linebacker Ken Agu, from Hackney, also played a decisive role in the triumph with a crucial third-quarter sack of Pirates quarterback Ryan Hunter that pushed East Kilbride out of scoring range when the Cobras' lead was just six points.

London's advantage was stretched to eight when the Pirates conceded a safety with a muffed punt deep in their own territory and versatile linebacker Mofondo, from Homerton, sealed the outcome with an interception in the final stages.

Sangobiyi also made a major impact in the Selhurst club's championship triumph, intercepting a pass from Hunter in the Cobras endzone and adding a number of tackles behind the line of scrimmage.

"Offensively we struggled and the game turned into a defensive battle, which was a surprise," Agu said of the match, which preceded the Premier Division showdown in which Haringey's London Blitz were crowned national champions.

"But Moses played really well. There were Great Britain scouts at the game and I'm sure a few of us caught their eye.
