Dublin success for Repton boxers

There was golden glory for a magnificent seven Repton boxers when they brought back victory awards from the Monkstown International Box Cup in Dublin, where they were the most successful club on parade, writes Len Whaley.

The tournament attracted entries from five countries, with Repton not only winning the top team trophy, but taking the best boxer award which went to Class one 36kg entry George Mitchell after his impressive double triumph.

In his opening bout he proved too good for Sean O’Dowell (Three Bridges) giving a sparkling performance as he moved into his final where he again shone in outpointing Terry Burnside from the powerful Birtley club Newcastle to clinch the top individual award.

In the Class One 30kg section Repton’s Harvey Smith launched his successful title quest beating strong Monkstown BC entry Jack Radley and followed up clinching gold beating Kevin Wall from Dublin’s Angels Boxing club.

At 33kg there was s silver medal for Repton’s Thomas Rolfe after he lost a split vote to classy opponent Oisin Read from the Immaculata BC.

Jordan Moore completed the Class One gold haul for the Bethnal Green club when he subdued tough Irish youngster Pat Myers (Innisfree BC) in their 39kg title-decider.

Repton continued their success march in Class Two competition where Henry Turner dominated his 42kg clash against Angels BC’s Francis O’Dowell and was good value for the gold medal win.

At 46kg, Jake Henty moved through with a good performance against Luke Tansay (Three Bridges BC) and then was awarded the gold medal when his scheduled rival was unable to go through with their bout.

In the Class Three there was further title success for Repton’s Michael Oates, who dominated the 36kg division, beating Wellington rival Husan Hussain in his opening bout.

He was paired with strong Crumlin youngster Craig Waugh in the final, but once again proved superior to bring back another gold medal for Repton.

Repton’s Tommy Roberts came through a trio of victories in the busy 42kg section where he opened with a good win over Sunderland’s John Purdy, followed by another success over Amirage Kinsing (St Andrews).

He went through for a final showdown against local favourite Cameron Fox from the Monkstown BC, but Roberts again showed his class to come through a worthy winner.

Another busy boxer in the Repton team, John Hanrahan, overcame Liam McDowell followed by a win over Docklands club boxer Sean Whelan.

In the final, he faced a member of the Brentwood BC, Connor Edwards and after a keenly-fought clash the verdict went to his rival with the Repton boxer taking the silver medal.
