Poplar rider enjoyed wonderful debut on senior stage

Mason Williams had a weekend to remember at Brands Hatch as he started life in the BMCRC MRO Minitwins Championship with two wins.

The Poplar rider expressed confidence his beforehand, insisting the circuit was his “strongest” and went on to demonstrate his talent with a stunning showing.

Williams was “over the moon” to qualify for pole by 0.036secs and that added to his belief before the first race.

The 23-year-old battled at the front throughout and eventually managed to secure a first victory in his maiden race at senior level, after winning the Rookie Minitwins 2014 series.

Unfortunately he couldn’t build on that success with another triumph, but he did manage to come second – just losing out by 1.4 seconds.

With two more races on the following day Williams was motivated to continue his form and get another win.

He said: “Race three was on Sunday and the weather was very wet, which suited me.

“I thrived in those conditions and I took the lead, got my head down and won by 4.9 seconds.”

Although Williams aimed to conclude the weekend with more glory, conditions started to dry and the wet patches on the circuit, alongside the strong wind, made it tougher.

He did lead up until the fourth lap, but was overtaken and finished with another runner-up spot to finish a memorable few days at the historic circuit.

“It was a great first weekend and something I never expected in my first season in the senior MRO class,” added Williams.

“I’m now looking forward to round two at Snetterton on April 24, which is my birthday.”
