Michael Channing leads the way in Repton triumph

Michael Channing was the star as Repton secured a team triumph over Sunderland ABC

Michael Channing led a Repton boxing team into action at Sunderland on Friday night and earned the best boxer of the night award after his win helped the Bethnal Green squad to a 6-3 team triumph.

Channing showed his ability against tough Sunderland boxer Lewis Sherriff in the only senior bout in the team clash, scoring effectively with long-range shots.

Sherriff battled boldly in an effort to turn the bout his way, but the Repton boxer stayed in front to clinch the verdict from all three ringside judges.

It was a busy night for the Channing family with three brothers in action on the night.

Ben Channing boxed well to outscore Michael Seaman with a sharp-hitting display, while younger brother Callum was unlucky to lose against Sunderland's Sean Atkinson after a nosebleed forced the bout to be stopped in the second round with the Repton boxer leading on the scorecards.

In a clash of two National Schoolboy title winners, Repton's Danny Arnold came through a winner against Sunderland rival Irun Greenwell following a closely-fought encounter.

In a cagey contest between two skilled boxers, it was Arnold who made his punches count to take a tight verdict at the end.

Sam McNess returned to action after taking a break from the sport and enjoyed a successful comeback as he proved too good for former National Schoolbiy semi-finalist Jimmy Slater to record another Repton win.

There was also a tight finish for another Repton teenage star but Romario Wallace was forced to endure disappointment after suffering a rare defeat when he finished on the wrong end of a points verdict.

Tough northerner Steve Pattison took solid shots from two-times National Schoolboy champion Wallace, but fought back strongly to take a majority verdict.

But his cousin Andreas Wallace boxed his way to a points win over Sunderland's Liam Hutchinson after piling up the points in a promising display on the show.

Repton's Obie Coates emerged victorious following a close tussle with Sunderland's Tom Waters as the Bethnal Green club youngster was named a points winner.

Oliver Hunt, from Repton, floored his rival Kevin Johnson as he staged a determined rally in the final round, but a split verdict went in favour of the hometown boxer.
