Morpeth School emerged as the dominant force at the Canary Wharf Open Team Table Tennis Championships by scooping three gold medals

Morpeth School emerged as the dominant force at the Canary Wharf Open Team Table Tennis Championships after scooping three gold medals at the tournament.

Some 242 youngsters took part in the annual event in Bethnal Green, which also included teams from Stepney Green School, Oakland's, Bishop Challoner, Deptford Green and the Table Tennis Associations of Kent and Essex.

But Morpeth were the big winners, taking titles in the Under-16 boys' category and both the Under-16 girls' and Under-13 girls' events.

Tournament organiser and Morpeth coach Grant Solder paid tribute to the standard of table tennis on show.

He said: "This is the fourth year we have run this tournament and this year has been the best yet.

"It was a very inclusive tournament, with a lot of very young players from all over London taking part in their first ever competition, but this did not compromise the exceptionally high standard of play exhibited throughout the event.

"It was a great success, and a big thank you goes out to Canary Wharf Group PLC for again sponsoring the great event."

Bangabandhu duo Honor Simpson-Cole and Akashi Alam lived up to their billing as No1 seeds in the Under-11 girls' event, steamrolling the opposition to take the title, while the Under-11 boy's title was won by the combined team of Harry Fang, from Bonner and Globe's Rijul Roychoudhury.

Oakland's dominated the Under-13 boy's competition, with first-string duo John Watson and Nasif Noor defeating B-team pair Aaron Bleasby and Uriah Higgins in the final, but Morpeth smashed Oakland's in the Under-13 girls' final as Sarah Fox and Harriet Taylor recorded a 5-0 rout.

And both Under-16s events produced all-Morpeth finals. Joshua James and David Ha upset A-team duo Rafi Con Kowlessar and Ashley Facey-Thompson to lift the boys' title, while Morpeth's first-string defeated their B-string team-mates in the girls' category.
