Wapping teams face mixed fortunes in October heat

Wapping Ladies’ first XI continued their great start to the season with a 5-2 win away to Broxbourne on
Saturday.

In the scorching October heat, captain Gemma Lyon and her team were well hydrated before the match and came firing out of the blocks, hitting the home side from the off.

The visitors were by far the better side and braces from captain Lyon and Rachel Haseloff as well as a Louise Radford goal were more than enough for Wapping to secure the win.

In fact, the visitors could have scored more had it not been for an excellent save by the Broxbourne keeper from a Jo Sumpter penalty flick.

It was not all plain sailing for the visitors though, as keeper Pip Smith made fantastic saves at the other end of the pitch at decisive times in the game which meant Wapping could keep the momentum going.

The result means that Wapping have won their first three games of the season, scoring 12 goals in total.

Wapping Mens’ first XI couldn’t match their female counterparts’ success as they drew away to Bishops Stortford.

Missing several key players and with coach Warren D’Souza missing the first three league games, brother Ryan took responsibility for the team.

Wapping started brightly and were in control of the game, dominating possession.

However, against the run of play, Bishops Stortford took the lead 10 minutes into the second half.

Moments later and Wapping were level when Ali Gunn found Mat Hayden on the edge of the D.

Hayden skilfully evaded the home defence before finding Harry Travers to score into an open goal.

The visitors continued to put pressure on the home defence, but despite eight short corners, failed to make the decisive breakthrough.
