The third East London hockey festival proved a hit at the Lee Valley Hockey & Tennis Centre.

Over 160 players from across the UK and Ireland competed on a busy weekend of mixed seven-a-side action, with local side Straight Outta Stratford winning the plate silverware.

Playing on the same newly laid Olympic pitches that will be graced by international teams at the Vitality Hockey Women’s World Cup next month, men and women of all ages and hockey levels brought their enthusiasm and sportsmanship to make this year’s event another great success.

Straight Outta Stratford beat Gatsby Gangsters on flicks after their match ended in a draw, while Hackney Thundercats won the cup final against Half Moon.

East London HC’s festival committee put on a weekend of social events, including a welcome party, fancy dress party, wind-down social, raffle and auction to raise over £600 for Hockey for Heroes and East London youth hockey.

Despite being plagued by injuries for most of the weekend, GS International won the most social team award for their cameraderie, friendliness and good sportsmanship and Gatsby Gangsters won best fancy dress.

Tournament director Charlotte Burge said: “We’d like to thank all the teams that travelled from far and wide to take part in the third East London hockey festival and who helped make it another great success.

“We’d also like to thank England Hockey and Lee Valley Hockey & Tennis Centre for letting us use their high quality facilities, as well as all who donated prizes and lots for the raffle and auction, plus the Legion of Frontiersmen for providing first aid and all who umpired and recorded scores.

“Without the hard work of the festival committee, the support of England Hockey and Lee Valley and the time and efforts of countless volunteers and helpers from across our extended hockey family in London and further afield, we wouldn’t have been able to make the festival the great success it was.

“Thanks to Hawkinsport, the England men’s and women’s teams, The Untouchables Originals and Andrew Macey, operations manager, for donating prizes and auction lots. These included a brand new Adidas hockey stick, two shirts signed by each England team, four tickets for the World Cup and two pairs of hockey socks the festival.”
