Wapping have made some appointments to their coaching staff ahead of the new season

Wapping have appointed new head coaches to both their men’s and women’s first teams ahead of the start of the new season.

Warren D’Souza will take on the role of player-coach for the men’s team, while Matt Bowen is the new head coach of the women’s side.

D’Souza has returned for a second stint as Wapping head coach and takes over from older brother Ryan.

His player career to date has seen D’Souza collect caps for England at every age group, while he has also won four English Premier League titles and a Euro Hockey League bronze medal.

And D’Souza is looking forward to combining playing duties with his coaching role at Wapping this season.

“Wapping is a fantastic hockey club. In recent years the club has developed into one of the biggest hockey clubs in the country,” he said after being appointed.

“The playing membership is huge, the facilities are second to none and, most importantly to me, the club has an on-field ambition to be competing at the top of the tree.

“I’m excited to be part of that ambition and will do what I can to help the club achieve it.”

Bowen, meanwhile, has played and coached at the highest standards in England, South Africa and Australia.

The new women’s head coach at Wapping was most recently captain for Canterbury’s men’s team, but Bowen is excited to start his role for the upcoming season.

“As a club, Wapping have grown over the years and their ambition is to be playing at a higher level,” he said.

“As a coach it’s fantastic to be working with players and management who are all moving towards achieving something great.”

Wapping chairman Matt Patterson added: “We’re really excited to welcome Matt and Warren as our new first team coaches.

“They both bring with them a wealth of playing and coaching experience that will help us realise our ambition to return to the National League.

“Combined with the word-class facilities we play on, I can’t wait to see what this season brings.

“I’d also like to say a huge thank you to our previous men’s coach Ryan for his seven years of service to the team.”

Both D’Souza and Bowen will hope for a successful term.
