Hockey: Wapping men take over at top

Wapping’s men moved to the top of the East Premier A table with a 3-1 win over previous leaders St Albans at Lee Valley.
James Bowler made some fine saves to deny the visitors early on and Jonny Madill deflected in a short corner to put Wapping ahead.
St Albans showed more energy in the second half and drew level with a volleyed finish after a move on the left.
Wapping responded well, as both sides received green cards, and regained the lead after breaking on the right as the ball found Madill in the D to slot home his second.
Grant Aidoo-Nash deflected a fierce hit past the St Albans keeper for the third goal with 10 minutes to go as Wapping leapfrogged their rivals to the summit ahead of a trip to Ipswich this weekend.
Wapping’s women had to settle for a share of the spoils against their St Albans rivals after a 2-2 draw.
The visitors struck first wit a far-post tap-in, but Wapping levelled in the second half as Katelynn Roganowicsz slotted home.
Sophie Tompkinson pushed high on the right and linked with Aisling McKeon and Ciara Murphy, before O’Sullivan set up Tash Wright to make it 2-1.
But St Albans converted a late short corner and might have won it, but for a brave block from Jordan Mulvaney.
Wapping hosted Norwich City in the Investec Tier 1 Challenge Cup on Sunday, but slipped to a 3-2 defeat.
McKeon put them in front from the spot after Ness Sharman was fouled and Kate Brannelly kept out three late corners before half time.
Wapping doubled their lead from a set-piece as Sharman deflected Lou Song’s strike into the goal, but Norwich hit back with a tap in at the far post after a counter attack.
The home side lost their discipline and received two yellow cards in quick succession, before Norwich levelled from a short corner.
And with Wapping still down to 10 players, Norwich caught them on the counter again, scoring from the right side of the D to secure victory and a place in the next round.
Wapping return to league action with a match against Sevenoaks this weekend.
