National League Div 2S: Lee Valley 3 Haringey 7
The CVS Haringey Racers earned the local bragging rights with victory in the London derby at Lee Valley last night.
It was the first meeting between the clubs for severals years and less than 30 seconds had been played when Alastair Band and Romanas Fedotovas were sent to the penalty box following an early clash.
Haringey’s Rob Jenner joined them on the sidelines moments later on a hooking call, but Lions could not make the powerplay count.
And Fedotovas returned to the sin bin on an illegal equipment call, which led to a 10-minute penalty, before both sides fell foul of the officials to earn bench minors for icing infringements.
Racers broke the deadlock in the 12th minute with a powerplay goal from Ricky Mills, as Jack Ball served a holding minor.
And Mason Webster doubled the visitors lead before the break, with an assist to Anthony Child.
The second period was barely a minute old when Fedotovas halved the deficit, but Andrew Campbell put Racers 3-1 up in the 26th minute.
Haringey’s joy was shortlived, though, as James Hepburn replied just 29 seconds later and Lions were back on level terms before the midway mark as Nick Alley found the back of the net.
Racers edged ahead again through Mills in the 35th minute and Campbell’s second goal of the night followed soon after to give them some breathing space heading into the final stanza.
And two goals in the space of 14 seconds sealed victory for Haringey, as Perry Whitlock and Sean Martin put the Racers 7-3 up in the 46th minute.
The visitors picked up a string of penalties in the closing 10 minutes of the match, but Lee Valley could not capitalise.
Lions will look to bounce back when they welcome Swindon to Lea Bridge Road next Saturday (February 1, 5.30pm), while Haringey head west to Wales to take on Cardiff tonight (7pm).
